The withdrawal of women’s singles fourth seed Tai Tzu Ying means seventh seed Wang Zhi Yi will take her place in the main draw of the KFF Singapore Open 2024.
Two-time winner Tai pulled out citing injury.
As a result, Wang’s Seed Withdrawal Move has given the competition an early tasty tie between world No.9 Gregoria Mariska Tunjung and No.10 Beiwen Zhang. The pair have met seven times, with Tunjung leading the rivalry 5-2. Tunjung aced their last clash in the All England Round of 16 in March.
The new draw management regulations which came into force at the Thailand Open two weeks ago state a withdrawn fourth seed shall be replaced by anyone seeded fifth to eighth in the same quarter.
The reshuffling of positions also sees the promoted Canadian Wen Yu Zhang play Wen Chi Hsu, Tunjung’s original opponent.

KFF Singapore Open 2024 starts tomorrow, with the first match scheduled at 10am Kuala Lumpur time (UTC +8).
Fun fact: Tunjung defeated Beiwen in three games at the same stage last year.
